Research suggests interference with muscle response to resistance exercise

As men and women age, increasing quantities of fat tissue inevitably take up residence in skeletal muscle. A small study of older and younger men conducted at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University suggests that a build-up of a fat molecule known as ceramide might play a leading role in muscle deterioration in older adults. The results of the study were published online this month by the Journal of Applied Physiology, a publication of the American Physiological Society.

The study enrolled ten 10 men in their mid-seventies to nine men in their early twenties. None of the men carried excess weight or had chronic health problems and none had exercised in six months. Ceramide was measured in a muscle biopsy taken at baseline. The participants performed a single bout of exercise (three sets of ten repetitions of knee extensions and leg presses) followed by two muscle biopsies which the authors used to examine how the exercise impacted muscle growth response.

"There is a known relationship between elevated ceramide levels and unhealthy muscle in obese adults, but to the best of our knowledge, this had not been studied in healthy weight, older adults," said Donato Rivas, Ph.D., the study's first author and a scientist in the Nutrition, Exercise Physiology and Sarcopenia Laboratory at the USDA HNRCA at Tufts University. "Our analysis of the muscle biopsies showed an accumulation of two types of ceramide molecules containing saturated fatty acids that were 156% and 30% higher in the older men. Furthermore, having higher accumulation of one of these saturated fatty acid types was associated with having less leg muscle mass in both younger and older men."

"Although it is well known that fat tissue replaces some of our muscle tissue as we grow older, we are seeking to understand whether some fat molecules are more damaging to muscle than others," said Roger A. Fielding, Ph.D., senior author and director of the Nutrition, Exercise Physiology and Sarcopenia Laboratory. "We suspect that the increased storage of ceramide we saw in the older men, exacerbated by the presence of saturated fat, has a part in weakening the anabolic signaling that responds to resistance exercises and helps with the assembly of new muscle."

Learning more about ceramide activity through larger, long-term interventional trials involving older and younger men and women may identify a role in dietary or therapeutic drug interventions for sarcopenia, an age-related condition of muscle loss and function.

"The deterioration of muscle is compounded by a loss of muscle strength, which really begins to decline around age 50 and appears to be a factor in the visible decrease in mobility people exhibit around age 80," added Fielding, who is also a professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University and at Tufts University School of Medicine. "Previous research done at Tufts and other institutions suggests that even with limited exercise older adults can maintain and build some new muscle. Until there is enough research to develop specific exercise and dietary interventions, staying as physically active as deemed safe by your health care provider can only benefit aging muscle."

Iran has pictures of restricted Israeli areas: Iran MP

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran holds pictures of Israeli bases and other restricted areas obtained from a drone launched into Israeli airspace earlier this month, an Iranian lawmaker was quoted as saying on Monday.

Earlier this month, Israel shot down a drone after it flew 25 miles into the Jewish state. Lebanese militant group Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the aircraft, saying its parts had been manufactured in Iran and assembled in Lebanon.

The drone transmitted pictures of Israel's "sensitive bases" before it was shot down, said Esmail Kowsari, chair of parliament's defence committee, according to Iran's Mehr news agency. He was speaking to Iran's Arabic-language Al-Alam, Mehr reported on Monday.

"These aircraft transmit their pictures online, and right now we possess pictures of restricted areas," Kowsari was quoted as saying.

Israeli air space is closely monitored by the military and, except for commercial air corridors, is restricted, with special attention paid to numerous military and security installations.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) ? Tommy Thompson, four-term Wisconsin governor and now Senate nominee, warmed up the GOP audience for the main event, which was an exuberant, humorous, always biographical plea from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for Republicans to get their friends and neighbors to vote.

Republicans say he has revived his campaign in the closing weeks and holds a slight edge.

Both the presidential election in this competitive state and the Senate contest will be a true test of the ability of the campaigns to energize voters weary after Republican Gov. Scott Walker prevailed in a June recall vote.

The election also stands as a tie-breaker on Wisconsin's political identity. The state backed President Barack Obama by 14 percentage points in 2008 but two years later elected Walker and tea party-backed Ron Johnson over incumbent Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold.

The Thompson-Baldwin race will help determine which party controls the Senate. Democrats hold a 53-47 advantage, with Republicans needing a net of four seats to grab the majority. If Republican Mitt Romney wins the presidency, the GOP will need just three: The vice president casts tie-breaking votes in the Senate.

DETROIT (AP) ? Major League Baseball is looking at ways to protect pitchers from being injured by batted balls such as the one that struck Doug Fister in the head, and says hat liners are a possibility in the minors next year.

The safety issue is on a "fast track," MLB senior vice president Dan Halem said Friday night.

"Hopefully, we can come up with something," he said. "We're making progress."

MLB medical director Dr. Gary Green has been talking to companies about protective headgear for pitchers, Halem said. A report is on the agenda at baseball's winter meetings in December.

A cap liner with Kevlar, the high-impact material used by military, law enforcement and NFL players for body armor, is among the ideas under consideration.

Halem said baseball already was exploring options when Oakland pitcher Brandon McCarthy was hit in the head by a line drive last month, causing a skull fracture and brain contusion.

"After that, it kind of pushed up our timetable," Halem said. "We decided to fast track it."

"We think it's possible for 2013 in the minor leagues," he said.

Fister was the latest pitcher to get hit. Gregor Blanco's second-inning shot caught Fister on the right side of the head and flew about 150 feet, the ball traveling so far that Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson picked it up on one hop.

Fister remained in the game Thursday night and worked into the seventh of a 2-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants. The Tigers said a team trainer pronounced Fister fine on Friday.

Many youth leagues require pitchers to wear helmets. Getting big league pitchers to adjust to something new would certainly take time, plus the approval of the players' union.

"I definitely think it's something worth exploring," Game 1 winner Barry Zito said after the Giants worked out Friday night at Comerica Park. "We've had high-profile examples of those injuries lately, what happened with Brandon and then here in the World Series."

Zito said he'd heard that MLB was looking into potential solutions.

"You don't want it to be too drastic," he said. "Little things can affect a pitcher's delivery."

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said there was merit to the study. Finding the right product would be the key, he said.

"It would depend on how intrusive it is," he said. "Pitchers would want it to be no irritant or agitant. The weight would be important."

When he returned to the A's after his accident, McCarthy said he would be willing to listen to ideas about protective headgar, provided it didn't impact his pitching.

Halem said baseball was in the early steps of getting a protective device on the field. It would require testing and an examination from an independent laboratory to see whether it could withstand the force of a line drive going 100 mph or more.

MLB could implement the safety change in the minors, having made similar moves involving larger batting helmets. Putting it in effect for the majors would require agreement from the players' association.

"We'd have to discuss how we'd roll it out," Halem said.

Baseball mandated batting helmets for big leaguers starting in 1971. Players already in the majors could opt not to wear them, and Boston backup catcher Bob Montgomery played until 1979 without one, instead putting a protective plastic lining inside his cap.

Fox broadcaster Tim McCarver watched the replay of the Fister ball and said he thought baseball might need to "resort to helmets for pitchers."

Philadelphia pitcher Vance Worley heard that remark and tweeted: "Pitchers....wearing helmets....really?"

Last year, Washington shortstop Ian Desmond hit a liner that struck Colorado pitcher Juan Nicasio in the head. Knocked off his feet, Nicasio broke his neck when he fell on the mound.

Desmond also heard McCarver's suggestion.

"Helmets for pitchers??? Really," Desmond tweeted.

Suicide bomber kills 37 at Afghan mosque during Eid

MAZAR-E-SHARIF, Afghanistan (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed at least 37 people in a mosque in Afghanistan's relatively peaceful north on Friday as worshippers gathered for holiday prayers, police officials said.

The attack, on the first day of the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, happened in Maimana, capital of Faryab province, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a spokesman for police in the Afghan north.

"The suicide bomber detonated explosives when our countrymen were congratulating each other on the Eid holiday," Ahmadzai said, adding that almost half of the dead were police.

It was not immediately clear if the Faryab police chief, who was not killed in the attack, was the target, Ahmadzai said.

"As soon as the police chief got in his vehicle the bomber detonated his explosives. It looks like the target was a large number of security forces," Ahmadzai said.

Violence is intensifying across the country, 11 years into the NATO-led war, sparking concerns over how the 350,000-strong Afghan security forces, often the target of the Taliban, will manage once most foreign troops leave by the end of 2014.

A WWI-era tank returns to Poland from Afghanistan

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? A tank used by Poland in its 1920 war against the Red Army was returned from Afghanistan where it was serving as a decoration at the defense ministry.

Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said Friday the French-made FT-17 tank has "historic and sentimental value" for Poland.

According to historians it probably was captured by the Bolsheviks during the war, and later sent to Kabul as a gift.

It was spotted at the Defense Ministry in Kabul by an Afghan employee of Poland's embassy, according to Piotr Lukasiewicz, the Polish ambassador to Kabul.

After maintenance it will be displayed at the Polish Armed Forces Museum, Siemoniak said.

Europe has only three such tanks, the museum says. It is the first tank on tracks with front cabin and rear engine.
