Fresh Ideas on How to Start a Brand New Family Tradition | Silly ...

family traditions

A family is in their favourite cafe every Sunday lunchtime. They order ?the usual?, and the waiter knows the children by name. The family leaves with a big wave, and the mum or dad calls out to the staff, ?we?ll see you next week!?.

Sound familiar? This is the picture of a family who have their own family traditions established in place. While you were pregnant, or while your child was still a baby, you probably had images in your own mind about how your family could establish their own traditions, and truly feel close-knit and comfortable. While each family is unique in their traditions, there are a few ways that you can kick-start your family?s own weekly rituals.

Plan activities the whole family enjoys
If you have two or three kids, it?s probably not a good idea to take the boys to a princess shop or the girls to the muddy, dirty fields to play some soccer. Instead, find a place you can go each week where everyone can be entertained. Perhaps the local park is suitable, with its playground and wide fields ? this way, your kids can find something new to do each week, while you and your significant other get fresh air and some time to yourselves. Alternatively, stay at home and play some board games one night of the week, or plan some family cooking fun at home ? everyone will get involved before you know it, and you?ll find plenty of new opportunities to bond.

For meals, choose a place with a wide selection
If you want to establish a family restaurant or cafe as a part of your family tradition, try to choose one with a wide selection of foods. Take a look at the menu: are there different meat options, sides, healthy salads, and drinks? If you choose a place with a diverse range, your family will always have the option to experiment, try something new, and taste each other?s dishes and desserts too.

Family traditions don?t have to be grand
You don?t need to spend an extravagant amount of money or drive for hours and hours to establish good, long-lasting family traditions. Even the little things, like a cup of tea together before bedtime or a family dessert every Monday night, can bring your family closer together. Try to include little family treats every day, and mix it in with some bigger things like a cafe or restaurant over the weekend.

Don?t be afraid to change them
As your family grows and changes, so will your family?s preferences ? and your family?s traditions. You don?t always have to do the same traditions ? whether your traditions are a source of comfort or a force of habit, it can?t hurt to try something new every once in a while. Who knows ? maybe you?ll discover a new tradition this way!

Do you have a favourite family tradition? How do you usually create new family traditions? Please share your ideas with us in the comments below.
